After diving into the readings, I'm starting to grasp just how deeply African culture weaves itself into various cultural practices. Gates' words, "I could feel Africa's presence here," resonated with me profoundly. It was like a lightbulb moment, connecting all the dots and revealing the significant diasporic impact.
Growing up in a New Orleans household steeped in jazz and blues, I never imagined how far-reaching those influences could be. Yet, here I am, discovering their ripple effect all the way to Cuba, shaping orchestral music like Danzon. It's incredible to think that Cuban-Be and Cuban-Bop, essentially jazz for Afro-Cubans, share roots with the music I've known since childhood. Take "Conga," for instance—the Afro-Cuban Manteca riff sets the stage for a fusion of cultures that speaks volumes.
Delving deeper into the Cuban Bop, I had a realization: I've been surrounded by this genre my entire life. Gloria Estefan's iconic track "Conga" has been the soundtrack to countless memories from my upbringing in the vibrant streets of New York City. Discovering the African Cuban influence behind it adds another layer of appreciation.
Recently, I stumbled upon Cimafunk's music, and it's been a revelation. The upbeat rhythms and seamless incorporation of diverse sounds speak to me on a whole new level. I urge you to experience it too—I've included a link to a mesmerizing Tiny Desk show by Cimafunk below.
In essence, this journey of exploration has not only broadened my musical horizons but also reaffirmed the rich tapestry of cultural interconnectedness that shapes our world.
I think it is really great that our Professor is introducing us to some additional cultured music. I would have never listened to Cimafunk if some of my classmates had not posted his music. I am beginning to broaden my music horizon to embrace these Afro sounds.
So I have never heard of Cimafunk until Professor presented to us. I absolutely love there must music. This allowed me to look further into the music. I have been watching there clips on and off. Its so many different styles of music that we miss out on because all of people are self centered on what they like. But this assignment really opened up my eyes to look into different cultures music.
It is funny to know that some genres of music have been around the whole time! I love that nostalgia feeling when that happens.
